About SLUSD
Overview {Peace}
San Leandro is very proud of its schools and the safe, inclusive learning environment that has been created for its students. The San Leandro School District consists of 12 schools serving approximately 8,800 students in grades K-12. The District is organized into eight elementary schools (K-5); two middle schools (6-8); and one comprehensive high school (9-12) that - beginning this fall - will be comprised of two separate campuses. The newest campus, opening its doors in time for the 2010-2011 school year, is a beautiful state-of-the-art facility for 9th grade students only. The addition of the 9th grade campus, the San Leandro High School Fred T. Korematsu campus, allows the District to more effectively meet the needs of its 9th grade students and allows our 10th-12th grade students more space and programs geared to their needs at the current San Leandro High School, or main campus. In addition, the District has Lincoln Alternative High School with an independent study program serving more than 200 students; and a comprehensive adult education program, the San Leandro Adult School, serving approximately 4,000 people annually. Our students are taught by 500 highly qualified teachers and supported by 250 dedicated classified personnel. The 2010-2011 general fund expenditure budget is approximately $66.5 million.

Demographics
The District's student population is 39.7% Hispanic, 16.4% African American, 15.6% Asian, 13.1% White, 8.7% Filipino, 1.4% Pacific Islander and 0.4% American Indian. According to the April 2006 Language Census there are 37+ languages spoken in the homes of 49% of our students. 26% of San Leandro's total population of students are at varying levels of English proficiency and are classified as English Learners. While this level of linguistic and cultural diversity enriches our schools, it also presents challenges as we seek the most effective means for raising all students to high levels of performance.

Inclusive, Welcoming and Respectful
The San Leandro Unified School District, with its focus on providing equitable learning opportunities for all students, is at the forefront of educational reform and committed to ongoing professional development. The District has a District-wide Equity Team which has attended Beyond Diversity Training, focusing on raising the achievement of all students while narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest performing students and eliminating the racial predictability and disproportion of which student groups occupy the highest and lowest achievement categories. The District is also proud of its partnership with the Alameda County Office of Education and the Teacher Action Research Initiative (TARI), a project integrating art into classrooms as a vibrant component of the District's equity work.

The District is committed to creating and maintaining a community that is inclusive, welcoming and respectful of all of its students, staff, and families. Another way the District is achieving this outcome is through the District's Safe Schools' program, which has earned San Leandro recognition as a leader in family diversity. Like our equity work, a major goal of the Safe Schools' program is to reflect and celebrate the unique beauty and diversity of the San Leandro District.
