  • February 2017                    Principal’s Message

We are just past the halfway point of the school year and the time is flying by.  Our school will begin the process of creating a new two-year school plan and the district is in the process of creating a new three-year strategic plan.  Before we continue the cycle of continual improvement at the district and site level it is important to celebrate the collaborative success of the past cycle of planning.

In three years we have gone from students visiting a computer lab once or twice a week to students having a 1 to 1 device with lightning fast internet access.  We have gone from the school library being unable to open to the library being fully staffed and open from 7:45 AM – 5:00 PM.  In addition, we have students from Kindergarten to Fifth grades accessing programs from school and home.  We have multiple systems of communication from school to home to support our families.

I want to honor our parents for walking hand in hand with teachers and students as we shift and deepen our learning for students through common core standards.  Much has happened in the last three years with your help and input.  Our district leadership has sought out and heard our parents’ voices and applied resources to the priorities developed in our strategic plan.  I want to thank the School Board and Superintendent McLaughlin for the vision and leadership to transform our school by supporting students, staff, and the community.  Madison is working better than ever and I look forward to dreaming big as we continue planning for the future success of our children.

     Your Principal,

    Garry Grotke

     Mustangs Make Change Happen!

Once again our Student Council is sponsoring the Pennies for Patients fundraising drive to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Your child should have brought home a parent letter and a collection box.  Students know they need to ask permission before bringing donations to school. We are hoping to raise $2000.00 for this amazing organization!

Another exciting opportunity to give back to the community will be our Jump Rope for Your Heart fundraiser.  There will be an assembly on February 15 for the students so they can learn how to support the American Heart Association raise funds for continued research and support.

  • Math Acceleration Request

With our transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Mathematics, we are updating our acceleration pathways and processes. CCSS in Math for 6th-8th grade contain standards previously taught in high school and include increased demands around reading, writing, and demonstration of mathematics concepts and complex problem solving in real world applications. In order for a student to successfully accelerate in mathematics and skip a course, there are many variables that must be considered. These variables include:

    1. Student Desire to Accelerate
    2. Teacher Recommendation
    3. Grades (A grade of “4” in elementary or “A” in secondary over the last year)
    4. Academic Ability as demonstrated through the following measures:
      1. Summative CAASPP Results in Mathematics
      2. Star Reading and Math Results
      3. Summative End of Year Assessment (end of year exam for year that will be skipped)

If you wish your student to be tested for acceleration in mathematics, please download and complete the below form provide the required documentation requested to your site principal no later than June 9, 2017.
