Gerhard (Garry) M. Grotke, Principal
James Madison Elementary School
I am currently completing my 29th year in public education. I have spent nine years as a classroom teacher, six years as a Superintendent/Principal of single school districts, and a year as a Director of Educational Services and Personnel. I am currently completing my 14th year as a Principal in the San Leandro Unified School District in Alameda County. (ADA 9,500) I have gained a depth of experience working in districts ranging from the most urban to the most rural.
In addition to serving as a full time Principal of more than 400 students with a renowned and well integrated Moderate to Severe differently-abled special day program, I currently serve on the ACSA region six executive committee as the business and community liaison. I was named Elementary Principal of the Year in 2013 for California. I have presented at statewide and national educational conferences on a variety of education topics ranging from school safety, creating a quality art program, student success and parent empowerment.
Recently our school was named English Language Learner site of the year. We have successfully eliminated the achievement gap for language learners for six consecutive years. In addition Madison has been part of the Bay Area Performance Assessment Network innovating instruction to prepare for common core standards, Project Based Learning and performance based assessments.
James Madison Elementary School is a great place for children to learn, grow and express their talents.
