Degrees and Certifications:

August 1, 2017

Welcome to the 2017-2018  school year! The beginning of a new school year is always an exciting time, not only for students, but for families and our staff as well. In this spirit, it is my pleasure to welcome back our  San Leandro Unified School District community, ready to continue the important work outlined in our new three-year strategic action plan.

Before we begin our work on the new strategic action plan, it is important for me to thank the entire SLUSD community for its support throughout our past successful strategic action plan. Our hard working and dedicated teaching staff embraced many changes in state standards, new curriculum and assessments, and the integration of technology in the classroom. The district’s support staff has shined throughout our reorganization of personnel, maximizing the productivity and efficiency needed to run a school district. Our parents have supported their students by providing safe and healthy home environments so students come to school ready to learn.  Lastly, in November 2016, the San Leandro community demonstrated their support for the school district by voting yes on our Measure J Bond initiative that will improve learning environments through technology enhancements and upgrades to facilities, benefitting the health and safety of all students.  Thank you!  We are currently pursuing a parcel tax, as our current tax expires next year,  to keep class sizes manageable and provide innovative academic programming in math, science, technology and the arts. Please visit the website at for more information on how you can further support our schools.

As we launch the new district strategic action plan, we continue to be focused on a three-year strategic plan cycle, ensuring the district is continually planning for the future. We are pleased with our recent successes but we understand there is much more work to do for our San Leandro students.  For the next three years, we will be focused on the following five strategic action goals:

  1. Teach, Learn, and Achieve
  2. Equity and Inclusion Through College and Career Readiness
  3. Collaborative and Engaged District Culture
  4. Family and Community Engagement
  5. Facilities and Technology

The expectations and key initiative for each strategic action goal are available for review by all community members on our district website and in a brochure that will be available at school sites and at the district offices soon.

We look forward to seeing all of our students on the first day of school, August 16, 2017.   Until then, enjoy the rest of the summer break.

Mike McLaughlin, Ed.D.
