As California’s importance in the global economy grows, so does the importance of the state’s students becoming proficient in at least one language other than English during the kindergarten-through-grade-twelve educational experience. Acquiring a second language sharpens students’ intellectual skills, increases their earning power, and broadens their cultural understanding. Every student deserves to be able to take advantage of these opportunities. The San Leandro USD offers language classes at the middle school and high school and continues to expand its course offerings for native speakers of Spanish. Clearly, knowing languages in addition to English helps prepare students for life and for success in the twenty-first century. (Foreign Language Framework for California Public Schools, 2003)
