    Principal’s Message

Congratulations Kathy Maier, SLUSD Teacher of the Year!

Kathy Maier, McKinley’s Instrumental 5th grade music teacher was named teacher of the year for San Leandro USD. Mrs. Maier is described by her colleagues as a truly gracious person and an excellent educator who after 39 years of teaching is still positive and who still loves her job. Thank you Mrs. Maier for providing our students with hands on learning. Thank you for teaching them that through hard work, practice, repetition and passion they are developing skills they will need to be successful. This recognition is well deserved.

    Summer Library Reading Program

With the end of the school year approaching, we know that you are making plans for your child’s

summer activities. We hope that you will encourage your child to read over the summer months.

Reading over the summer actually helps prevent the “summer slide”, which refers to the months

of summer vacation when many kids lose some of the valuable skills learned during the school

year. The San Leandro Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge offers a fun way to encourage

your child to keep reading and learning over summer vacation. It runs from June 1 to August 19,

and it’s free for all ages.

    Farewell 2018-2019 school year

As our summer begins, I would like to express how grateful I am to be leading such an amazing community of students, parents and staff.  Thank you for another wonderful and productive school year. I can’t thank everyone enough for your endless hours of volunteering, chaperoning, reading, organizing, donating and doing whatever was necessary to support students—both at home and at school.  Special thanks to our PTO who, as usual, went above and beyond the call of duty to provide whatever was necessary to add to our students’ already rich school experience.

We have been working diligently on class assignments for next year. As many of you know, our process is to have teachers make recommendations on student groupings for the following year. However, the final approval rests with me. This year has been no different. You will receive/be notified of  your class assignment in August. We cannot accommodate requests for changes at that time and we are unable to disseminate any information on class assignments before that time. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Have a great summer full of fun and continuous learning. See you in August.

  • Seeking Volunteers for TK & Kindergarten Classrooms

If you are interested in working in either transitional kindergarten or kindergarten classrooms, our elementary schools are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers! Our schools especially need support for 30-60 minutes at a time in the classroom, during recess, and during lunch.

Please contact McKinley's Parent Facilitator Jennifer Amate at jamate@slusd.us to learn how you can become a volunteer.
