• Gerhard (Garry) M. Grotke, Principal

    James Madison Elementary School

I am currently completing my 32nd year in public education.  I have spent nine years as a classroom teacher, six years as a Superintendent/Principal of single school districts, and a year as a Director of Educational Services and Personnel.  I am currently completing my 16th year as a Principal of James Madison Elementary School in the San Leandro Unified School District in Alameda County. (ADA 9,500)  I have gained a depth of experience working in districts ranging from the most urban to the most rural. I recieved my teaching credential from San Francisco State University, (Go Gators) and my Master Degree from Chapman University.

In addition to serving as a full time Principal of more than 500 students with a renowned and well integrated Moderate to Severe differently-abled special day program, I currently serve on the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) region six board of directors.   I was named ACSA Elementary Principal of the Year in 2013 for California. I have presented at statewide and national educational conferences on a variety of education topics ranging from school safety, creating a quality art program, student success and parent empowerment.

In 2018, James Madison Elementary was honored as a California Distinguished School.  We have been recognized as the Alameda County office of Education as the 2014 English Language Learner site of the year.  We love inspiring students to succeed and we we pride ourselves inworking closely and collaboratively with San Leandro Unified School District, families and the community to create the best possible learning environment for all students.

James Madison Elementary School is a great place for children to learn, grow and express their talents.

Thank you for all the support, I am proud to serve as your principal.
